Ex Western Australian steam locomotive, S547, in storage in a disassembled state,
on the
Bellarine Peninsula Railway in Victoria Australia, awaiting restoration.
S547 was one of 10 of this type built at the Midland workshops,
which entered service between 1943 and 1947. They were all withdrawn
in 1970. They operated on the Eastern line initially, and also in the South
West later in their lives. Interestingly, the driving wheels are of the same
pattern and diameter to the Australian Standard Garratts
which entered service
as wartime additions on the 3ft 6in gauge systems in Queensland, South Australia,
Western Australia and Tasmania, with one later operating on a short private railway at Geelong
Victoria for a time, carrying limestone from a quarry to be processed to cement.
Early in the lives of these West Australian built 'S' locos, the tenders were modified
to carry less coal and more water to improve their operating range between watering stops.
The vehicle visible behind the loco in the above picture, is not the tender
(which is separated), but a stored van.
