Wording of the UBAG's Petition to the Legislative Council of Victoria

PETITION

To the Honourable the President and Members
of the Legislative Council Assembled in Parliament

This Petition of certain citizens of the State of Victoria draws to the attention of the Legislative Council the need for an urgent review of forestry operations in the 350 Upper Bunyip Forestry Block, and a change in land use of this vestige of native forest in the Cardinia Shire.

Your petitioners therefore request that the Minister for the Environment, the Hon John Thwaites, order an immediate suspension of logging operations in the 350 Upper Bunyip Forestry Block until a comprehensive scientific study is undertaken throughout the Block to establish fully the extent of threatened flora and fauna species and other natural and social values (including Aboriginal cultural values), on the grounds that:

  1. The Upper Bunyip River is a site of National Botanical and Zoological Significance with a wealth of biodiversity values of which many are listed as threatened and protected under the Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act 1988;
  2. The 350 Upper Bunyip Block remains in a relatively fine condition compared to other forest areas close to Melbourne, and it contains some of the best Cool-Temperate Rainforest and wet Sclerophyll Forest gullies in the Westernport region;
  3. Cessation of logging in the 350 Upper Bunyip Block is consistent with the Government's recent initiatives on cutbacks in logging production;
  4. Large population growth in surrounding areas (and particularly the south-eastern growth corridor) requires that education, passive recreation and tourism opportunities be increased nearby, and that there be a comprehensive common management plan for balanced usage of the area - including the 350 Block and the Bunyip State Park;
  5. The natural and social values of the 350 Upper Bunyip Block are complementary to those of the Bunyip State Park and the 350 Block should be annexed to the Bunyip State Park as a special reserve for environmental conservation, non-motorised passive recreation, and international tourism.
