How to Support the UBAG!

This could have been
another delightful view
across the valley of the
Bunyip River from the
Fishers Loop Walking
Track, if clear-felled
logging had been restricted
on the opposite slopes !

Much worse damage than
this is scheduled for
coming logging seasons !

Positive ways for supporting the UBAG are:

Join the group and encourage others to join!

Help us to publicise the UBAG's campaign as widely as you can!

WRITE LETTERS to Victorian Members of Parliament, the Council of the Shire of Cardinia, your local municipal councillors, your local newspapers, etc - expressing your support for the objectives of the UBAG.

In the first instance, we suggest you write to:

The Honourable Steve Bracks MP, Premier and Minister for Multicultural Affairs
1 Treasury Place, Melbourne 3002. Phone (03) 9651 5000.
Fax (03)9651 5054.
Emphasise why an embargo should be placed on logging in the 350 Upper Bunyip Forestry Block to protect the natural values of the block, and to provide Melbourne's residents with a valuable forest retreat for passive recreation and tourist development opportunities. Include your reasons why this block should be added to the Bunyip State Park as a special haven for foot-based passive recreation only.

The Honourable John Thwaites MLA, Minister for Environment
1 Treasury Place, Melbourne 3000
Phone (03) 9651 0222 Fax (03) 9651 1188.
Emphasise that, given the threatened natural, heritage, and water supply values in the 350 Upper Bunyip Forestry Block, and the need for increased passive recreational opportunities for Melbourne's residents and tourists, plans for logging in this block should be set aside immediately and management of this block should be transferred to Parks Victoria to pave the way for its inclusion into the Bunyip State Park as a special reserve for foot-based passive recreation, (and, ultimately, National Park status!)

The Honourable John Brumby MP, Treasurer and Minister for State and Regional Development
Level 4, 1 Treasury Pl, Melbourne 3002 Phone (03) 9651 6255
Fax (03) 9651 0759
Emphasise why the 350 Upper Bunyip Forestry Block should be protected from logging and reserved as a place for passive recreational enjoyment by the residents of the developing suburbs along the south-eastern growth corridor, and Melbourne's citizens as a whole. Emphasise also the wonderful tourist potential of this block for passive recreational enjoyment by international and interstate visitors. Please suggest also - that provided the 350 Block is preserved from logging, its long-term value to the Victorian economy will far outweigh its short-term returns from logging.

Ms Tammy Lobato MLA, Member for Gembrook
1/87 Main St, Pakenham 3810
Phone (03) 5941 1653 Fax (03) 9651 2101.
Ms Lobato's electorate contains the 350 Upper Bunyip forestry block! Please make known that you are aware that Ms Lobato was helped into parliament (through Greens preferences) by the UBAG's "How to Vote in Gembrook" campaign.
A
sk her to approach the Premier and the Minister for Environment, requesting that they exercise their power to set aside all future plans for logging in the 350 Block.
Ask her to lobby for the management of this block to be transferred to Parks Victoria to pave the way for its inclusion into the Bunyip State Park as a special reserve for foot-based passive recreation.

Mr Adam Somyurek MLC, Member for Eumemmering Province
1/5 Gloucester Ave, Berwick 3806
Phone (03) 9796 1987 Fax (03) 9796 1891.
Mr Somyurek's province contains the lower-house District of Gembrook. Reinforce that you are aware that Ms Lobato was helped into parliament (through Greens preferences) by the UBAG's "How to Vote in Gembrook" campaign, and ask Mr Somyurek to support Ms Lobato's lobbying on behalf of the UBAG.
Ask him to lobby for the management of this block to be transferred to Parks Victoria to pave the way for its inclusion into the Bunyip State Park as a special reserve for foot-based passive recreation.

The Honourable Robert Doyle MP, Leader of the Opposition,
Parliament House, Melbourne, 3002
Phone (03) 9576 1850 Fax (03) 9576 1849.
Please raise similar arguments to those you would present to the Premier and the Minister for Environment.

The role of Liberal Shadow Minister for Environment has been assigned to Mr Phil Honeywood, Deputy Leader of the Opposition! This action speaks for itself, in terms of the growing recognition of 'environment' as an important issue for all of the major political parties.

Your local MLA and MLCs - reinforcing similar points.

PLEASE DO NOT DELAY - SEND YOUR LETTERS NOW !

A Special Note to Casey/Cardinia People:
Please help to raise local community awareness by writing a 'Letter to the Editor' of your local community newspapers - and in particular, the Pakenham/Berwick Gazette, and the Ranges Trader Mail.
